The last few days have been a whirlwind. It’s been so much fun being back in Chicago, especially staying downtown. On Wednesday I visited my old neighborhood, rode the train up to Lincoln Square and got to pop into my favorite prenatal yoga class. Then I soaked up my last night of solo traveling with TV and room service, followed by yesterday which was an utter flurry of activity.
I spent the majority of yesterday the AWP conference and it was fantastic. I’ve never been before and it was incredibly heartening to be around so many other writers. I attended a couple of fantastic panels, learned a ton of great tips from other writers about getting (and keeping) books out in the world, and then was a presenter on a panel about blogging.
Me with my fellow panelists: Caitlin Leffel, Turi Fesler, Rachel Vogel, & Sarah Klenakis
I swear, I’m getting better and better at this public speaking stuff and am actually beginning to enjoy it. What I most enjoy is getting to speak on things I’m passionate about and to help others with stuff that I’ve worked really long and hard to understand. Yes, that includes anything from grief to blogging!
After the panel I buzzed back to the hotel to reunite with Greg and Vera who had just arrived from Los Angeles. We had only about 45 minutes before we had to hop in the car and leave for an incredible evening in Andersonville at Women & Children First bookstore. I can hardly describe how amazing last night was! So many people came out to my reading and there were friends there from all areas of my life, and lots more that I’d never met. I felt more comfortable than ever reading and talking, and the entire experience was just lovely.
Me, with my big pregnant belly.
The line to get books signed!
With my beautiful friend Ron.
This morning, after rushing off WAY too early to an Antioch University Alumni brunch I came back to the hotel and had the chance to relax with my little family for a while.
A few other random things:
I’m going to be starting a new feature here on the blog in which I publish excerpts of some of the incredible letters I’ve been receiving in response to my book. The outpouring of stories and letters has just been remarkable and so heartwarming that I feel compelled to share them. Look for the first post of this kind over the weekend.
Did I mention that I got the chance to hang out with Christina Hendricks (AKA Joan from Mad Men) in January? Well, here’s proof: I wrote this month’s cover story on her for BlackBook Magazine.
That’s all for now. I have loved, loved meeting so many blog readers in the last few weeks and days. Please come out and say hi tonight, or if you’re in Boston!
